1980-1985 Overview

Spurs won the 100th FA Cup final thanks to two goals from Ricky Villa. His second strike was one of the greatest ever seen at Wembley. The following season, Spurs finished fourth in the league and once again won the FA Cup, this time they beat QPR 1-0 in a replay. The 1983 FA Cup witnessed a miss that would haunt Brighton striker Gordon Smith for the rest of his playing career.

The Seagulls had the FA Cup at their mercy in the final minute of extra time against Manchester United when Smith wasted a great chance. In the replay, United treated the Seagulls to a 4-0 roasting and Smith’s clanger was immortalized in the title of Brighton’s fanzine: ‘And Smith must score.’ The 1984 FA Cup final between Everton and Watford ended in a 2-0 comfortable 2-0 victory for the Evertonians.

The 1985 FA Cup final handed Everton the chance of winning a historic treble, after winning the league championship and the European Cup Winners Cup. Everton were denied the historic treble when they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United.
