1998-2002 Overview

Manchester United were in arguably the greatest form of their career in the 1998-99 season, After winning the league championship in style, they comfortably beat Newcastle in the FA Cup final 2-0, with goals coming from Paul Scholes and the substitute, Teddy Sheringham. A week later, United went on to win the champions league, to win a unique treble.

The 2000 FA Cup final was between Chelsea and Aston Villa. Villa had not won a major trophy in years and their previous final was against Manchester united in the league cup which they lost in 1992. Chelsea won the FA Cup three years earlier thanks to an early strike by Roberto Di Matteo and he was once again Chelsea’s cup hero scoring a stunning winner against Aston Villa in the FA Cup final. Chelsea was the winners of the first FA Cup final of the new millennium.

The 2001 FA Cup final was played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, and did not disappoint. Arsenal had much of the game and took the lead; however with only ten minutes remaining, Michael Owen, scored two great goals and Liverpool won the FA Cup in a year which they also won the league cup and the UEFA Cup.

Arsenal met Chelsea in the 2002 FA Cup final, Arsenal had already comfortably won the league and were in search of winning the double for the first time since 1998. Ray Parlour took Arsenal into the lead with a stunning strike and the score line was doubled moments later as Freddie Ljungberg scored Arsenals second of the match to seal FA Cup final victory.
