Mark Hughes
FA Cup Status – Winner (Manchester United) 1990, 1994
Draped in red and white the Manchester United fans on the Wembley terraces watched in silence. Seven minutes of extra time remained in the 1990 FA Cup final and their team were behind 2-3 to Crystal Palace. Then mark Hughes suddenly broke clear and stroked the ball under Nigel Martyn to save the blushes of the Red Devils. Hughes won the FA Cup with Manchester United in 1990 and he helped them win the 1994 FA Cup final, his performances in the semi final matches against Oldham was outstanding and if it was not for his great performances they would not have won the competition. Hughes’s finest hour came as he scored two of Manchester United’s goals in the European Cup Winners Cup final of 1991.
Marco Gabbiadini
FA Cup Status – Runner up (Sunderland) 1992
Gabbiadini was undoubtedly one of the strongest, compact athletes in the game during the 1990’s. He was a direct player who won the ball and always took the shortest route to goal. He moved to Sunderland in 1987 and he made an immediate impact at the club, in fact during his time he averaged nearly a goal in every game. The highlight of his career must have been helping Sunderland, a second division team, into the FA Cup final. Gabbiadini scored in every round of the tournament apart from the final and was the competitions top scorer of the 1991-92 season. A true FA Cup legend in every right.
Gary Mabbutt
FA Cup Status – Winner (Tottenham) 1991, Runner up (Tottenham) 1987
If dedication to a specific club and to the game could win trophies, Mabbutt would have won all. Mabbutt spent 16 seasons at White Hart Lane, and was a permanent fixture in the first team through out. Installed as captain of Spurs in 1988, Mabbutt became an inspired choice. Despite scoring an own goal in the 1987 FA Cup final, Abbott was certainly a big help the FA Cup winning team of 1991, he captained Tottenham to FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest.
David Hirst
FA Cup Status – Runner up (Sheffield Wednesday) 1993
A cult hero at Wednesday, Hirst was consistent for them in his 12 year spell at Sheffield. Goals were easy to come by during his era; he had a great header of the ball and was a great provider of the ball. It was in the early 90’s where Hirst was simply at his best, scoring 24 league goals in the 1990-91 season which in turn earned him a place in the England starting line up. Hirst was in inspirational form during the 1992-93 season as his goals helped Wednesday reach the FA Cup final, his goal in the final forced the match to go to a replay. |
