FA Cup Match: Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal (FA Cup Final)
Date Played: May 2001

Arsenal had total control of the early stages of this FA Cup encounter between the two heavy weights of English football. Freddie Ljungberg released Thierry Henry and screamed past Liverpool goalie Westerveld and he was blocked by Henchoz blocked him near the goal line, however despite the penalty claims, nothing was awarded. The tempo of the match increased as the match entered its second period. Danny Murphy crossed a brilliant free kick in and Emile Heskey came close to heading the ball into the net as Seamen saved well. Henry came extremely close 10 minutes into the second half as Ashley Cole had a relatively easy opportunity missed as Sammy Hyypia cleared the ball off the line. Ljunberg lobbed the ball right over Westerveld mid way through the second half and once again Sammy Hyypia cleared the ball off the line once again. With twenty minutes remaining on the clock, Liverpool goalie, Westerveld had a dreadful moment with a poor defencive clearance, and as Pires played Freddie Ljungberg in, he rounded past the Hutch goalkeeper and scored easily. Arsenal more than deserved the lead and they nearly doubled there lead if it was not for a great point blank save from a fierce Henry shot. Houllier made a double substitution, bring Fowler and Berger on the field. With eight minutes remaining Owen equalized for Liverpool and the match was now to be won. Few moments later the great comeback by Liverpool was complete as Michael Owen once again scored, racing past Tony Adams and comfortably getting the ball past Seamen into the back of the net. The match ended 2-1 to Liverpool and they were the winners of the 2001 FA Cup final.
